DEGC will offer an immersion experience in its innovative approaches to developing essential neighborhood retail development in the city of Detroit. Its two targeted programs are REVOLVE Detroit and the Detroit Green Grocer Project. REVOLVE is a cutting-edge program to grow neighborhood retail based on a place-making strategy that builds collaborations among community leaders, building owners, entrepreneurs, and artists to activate vacant storefronts with transformational businesses and art installations. Attendees will get a literal taste of REVOLVE’s as they sample the offerings and meet the owners of a bake shop and a restaurant that went from pop-up to permanent with assistance from REVOLVE. The Detroit Green Grocer Project focuses its neighborhood retail development on grocery stores, to provide good food choices for Detroit consumers while stabilizing communities and creating jobs. Green Grocer supports stores with technical assistance to improve facilities and marketing efforts, facade improvement matching funds to create more attractive store exteriors, and help in finding non-traditional sources of capital for large expansion projects. Session attendees will enjoy additional refreshment and insight from owners of two independent grocers who have made significant improvements to their stores with the help of the GGP. The REVOLVE and GGP program managers will facilitate a discussion to allow attendees to get first-hand information about how these programs are working and how they fit in with DEGC’s overall program to bring new jobs and investments to Detroit.
